Seattle, WA City Guide

With cities like New York and LA taking most of the spotlight in the USA, a place like Seattle doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it deserves. A fascinating urban jungle tucked right up in the northwest, in Washington state, Seattle is a city teeming with life and unique culture. After having been founded in the mid-19th century, Seattle has had a rocky past, with economic struggles and even disasters like The Great 1889 Seattle Fire. Nevertheless, Seattle has continually bounced back from disaster time and time again. Now, it’s one of the most underrated cities in the US, and bursting with activity sure to please visitors.

Popular Attractions

One of the most iconic Seattle landmarks is Pike Place Market, which as been providing fresh food to the city for over 100 years. Make sure you watch out for the fish vendors, who gleefully toss giant fish to each and entertain the crowds. Another icon that you certainly should not miss is the Space Needle, which has been gracing Seattle’s skyline since 1962. Take a ride up to the top level in the elevators, and grab a bite to eat while looking out over the beautiful city – especially impressive at sunset.

Other unmissable Seattle attractions include the Olympic Sculpture Park, full of creative pieces of artwork, complete with free views of the city, water, and mountains beyond, Seattle Art Museum, and the Museum of History and Industry.

Being on the shores of some of the freshest oceans in the world, Seattle’s seafood and fish dishes are some of the most distinguished in the USA. Make sure you try some Seattle salmon, and if you happen to stumble upon a fish and chip shop, you’d be an idiot not to go in. Wash it down with some of Seattle’s favourite drink – coffee – and you’ll be considered a local in no time.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is Seattle’s major flight hub, and offers connections to locations all over the States, and international connections to Canada, trans-Pacific routes, ssome major European airports, and to the UAE.

Tips for Travellers

For a different view of Seattle, and one that many say is the best, head up to the observation deck of the Columbia Center, otherwise known as the Sky View Observatory. As the highest observation tower west of Mississippi, it provides unbeatable views over Seattle, and allows you to take a picture over Seattle with the Space Needle actually in it. Not only that, but the tickets are actually cheaper than the Space Needle, too. Go at sunset for some of the most magical sights Seattle has to offer.

Even though it’s the northernmost city in the US, Seattle’s temperature doesn’t drop too low in winter. However, it is notoriously rainy in the winter months. Make sure you pack your raincoat!

Fun Facts

The first ever Starbucks was opened in Seattle on March 30th 1971, and was later moved next to a location next to Pike Place Market, which you can still visit today. Although expect it to be perpetually busy!

Seattle is a city of many firsts. It was the first city in the USA to put police on bicycles, play a Beatles song of the radio, and is home to the world’s first gas station.
