Melbourne, VI City Guide

Brief History

Melbourne is the largest city in Victoria, the warm, green region of south-east Australia. It was founded as a settlement in the 1830s and, soon after, the discovery of gold in Victoria led to a massive gold rush. As the main port in the area, Melbourne benefited greatly from the gold rush and the influx of people, investment, and ideas that came with it. Today, its diverse population makes in the “cultural capital” of Australia.

Transportation

As one of Australia’s main cities, Melbourne is a main travel hub for the country, and direct flights to Melbourne can be found in many major cities in both Asia and the Americas. Melbourne is served by two airports, Melbourne Airport and Avalon Airport. Melbourne Airport is closer to the city (about 22km / 14mi away), and is easily reached via the Skybus. Skybus runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in both directions from the airport to the city center and back. This is by far the easiest and cheapest way to get into the city from Melbourne Airport. If you’re looking for cheaper flights to Melbourne, consider using Avalon Airport. The airport is much smaller and more than twice the distance, but you can often save a considerable amount of money. Even factoring in the additional cost of the slightly longer bus ride (which is not much), Avalon is still likely to be the cheapest option.

Central Melbourne itself is fairly compact and easily navigable on foot. Although there are many far-flung suburbs, these are not typically of much interest to tourists. Trains, buses, and trams can get you almost anywhere in the city, and a convenient online trip planner can help you find the best routes. While it’s not necessary within Melbourne to have a car, it’s sometimes a good idea to rent one – this will enable you to see the scenic countryside of Victoria and to get a break from the city once in a while during your stay.

Popular Attractions

  • Australian rules football was born in Melbourne, and is extremely popular. In fact, Melbourne alone has 9 different teams – more than half the entire league! If you’re lucky enough to be in town for a game, it’s a worthwhile experience.
  • The docklands district has many brand-new shops, bars, and restaurants. There is lots of variety here, which makes it a good destination for families.
  • Melbourne has a number of high-quality museums, several of which are quite unique to the city itself. These include the Immigration Museum, Melbourne Museum, and Police Museum.
  • The Parliament House of Victoria is a large historic building that was once the seat of the Australian government.

Food

Melbourne has a dizzying variety of food options, from Italian to African and Vietnamese. There is no well-defined “Australian Cuisine,” but there are a few unique food items, such as emu burgers and kangaroo steaks, that can be found nowhere else.

Tips for Travelers

  • There’s a saying in New England that “If you don’t like the weather in Boston, wait five minutes,” and the same could be said of Melbourne. Before you go, be prepared for the possibility of a wide range of weather conditions that can change very rapidly in any season.
