Amsterdam City Guide

Brief History

People have been living in the area now known as Amsterdam for many hundreds of years. Fishermen were the first inhabitants, making their living by fishing in the waters of the Amstel river. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Amsterdam became a major trade hub and one of the most important cities in the world. Ships from Amsterdam’s harbor went all over the world to trade and explore.

Transportation

Flights to Amsterdam come into Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which is a short train ride from the airport to Amsterdam Central Station. Taking a taxi or renting a car is possible, but both are much slower and vastly more expensive than the clean, fast, and reliable trains.

The best way to get around Amsterdam once you’re in the city is by tram. Trams are highly reliable and will take you to any of Amsterdam’s many neighborhoods. There are also busses and a metro system. All public transit is paid for by a special card which you can purchase at tourists offices or train stations.

Popular Attractions

  • A great way to get an introduction to the city is to take a boat tour. Relatively cheap and usually not too crowded, these tours will take you around Amsterdam’s many canals and let you see the major sights from the water. Many tourists, fresh off their flights to Amsterdam, go straight to the boat for a canal tour in order to familiarize themselves with the city.
  • Amsterdam has many renowned art museums, most clustered around the city center; these include the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum, which contains many famous pieces from Europe’s Golden Age.
  • The Anne Frank house is a must-see for many tourists.
  • The city is dotted with parks, such as the Vondelpark in the south, which is exceptionally large and peaceful.

Food

Amsterdam is definitely more known for its drinks than for its food. Many world-famous beers, including Heineken and Amstel, are produced here, and there are smaller breweries to explore as well. Some tour companies offer tours of the Amsterdam breweries, many of which are free (although the beer is not!). Amsterdam also has a very large Surinamese population, so if you’re looking for Latin American food, there are plenty of good options. Remember that Amsterdam is a global city, so the food you can find food from all over the world here. When it comes to local specialties, the one food that Amsterdam is known for is cheese. There are several excellent cheese shops in the city center where you can try the local varieties.

Tips for Travelers

  • Be careful when walking around the canals – many of them do not have guardrails, and the water is generally not clean enough (or warm enough!) for swimming.
  • Remember that any place called a “coffee shop” probably sells a lot more than just coffee.
